SketchUp Follow Me tutorial

by Design Workshop Sydney

This SketchUp Follow Me tutorial will explain how the tool can be used in all sorts of different situations, like creating gutters for a building. We also explain how it’s done in our SketchUp training courses.sketchup-follow-me-2
Firstly make sure your building’s walls are grouped, otherwise the path for the gutters will stick to them. Next draw a set of lines around the roof edges which will comprise the gutter path. Right-click and Hide the walls now to see what you’re doing better. Or move these lines to one side to see better.
Now draw a profile for the gutter by drawing a rectangular face 200 x 100mm. Make sure this profile is drawn perpendicular to the path. Next draw the gutter profile on the rectangle and fillet the corners if necessary with the Arc tool. Delete the extra lines with the Eraser tool.
There are at least two ways of using the Follow Me tool, but the following is the easiest method. Select the lines which make up the path, then select the Follow Me tool and zoom in to click on the profile shape. The profile will follow the path from one end to the other.
Then select the whole gutter object by triple-clicking on it, and right-click on it to Make Group. Finally make the walls visible again to move the gutter into place.
